#HCAVolunteers – Wendy

Volunteer Wendy joined Holborn Community Association in June 2019 helping out with our Thursday Creative Communication group. She shares with us how it’s been helping to run art activities online and what she gets out of volunteering with HCA

“I’ve been helping out with the creative communication group since last year.  It’s called ‘creative communication’ because we do different types of art activities that encourage children with communicational difficulties to interact with others by creating art using a variety of fun materials.

During lockdown, we have been running our sessions online using zoom.  Transferring the sessions online is difficult for some taking part, but others can also be more engaged.

The marble run is one of my favourite activities and it suits perfectly to the lockdown as we need to save the toilet rolls. It was amazing to see the children pile up books and bean cans, and join the toilet paper rolls to make a large marble run.

It can be a challenge coming up with interesting things to talk about when you just have been at home and working during the sessions.

Looking back it has been a wonderful year volunteering with HCA. It’s an amazing team that has designed and delivered the art sessions. It’s lovely to see that children enjoy doing art and they want to communicate through art. I also benefit from the joy of doing art!
I also enjoy the interaction. I have a strong interest in art therapy for people with special needs. It’s a great opportunity for me to interact and work with this special group of people and to really know the impact of art.  I enjoy the FUN!
Thursday afternoon is the highlight of my week but I still miss everyone whilst we are apart.
