‘Apart – Together’: Lockdown through Spoken Word

From January to April 2021, 13 young people aged 13-24 worked with us on our online Spoken Word and filmmaking project to produce a series of powerful and emotive short films about their experience in lockdown 3.0, on the theme of ‘Apart – Together’.

Chace, our young Media Arts Intern, has been developing his leadership and facilitation skills assisting our professional artists, songwriter Joe Mbala and filmmaker Sophie Burrows in the workshops, running games in the sessions, and providing peer support to young people in the group as they learnt skills in audio recording, poetry writing and video-making.

Alongside this Chace has been gaining skills in marketing and social media, using online design tools to design posters, as well as directing his own two videos about his experience as a young person in lockdown.

‘I learnt how to edit and add music to videos. I learnt how to work with young people and how to take lead and charge of small groups’.

Chace has also said that he would like to continue making films and wants to take photography and camera work up in the future.

We have been really impressed by how well Chace has adapted to working remotely on Zoom during his internship, and we really look forward to having him come and support our in-person workshops soon!

Spoken Word Films are on the Media Arts Club channel here (no.1-6)
