HCA Befriending Scheme

The HCA Befriending Scheme aims to reduce loneliness and isolation and increase the quality of life of older people living in the Holborn, Bloomsbury and Covent Garden areas. The scheme supports mainly house-bound older people, matching them with trained volunteers who visit them at home on a regular basis.

Make a Difference to the Life of an Older Person

We are looking for caring, reliable people to visit isolated older people living in the Holborn area; providing company, friendship and a link to the wider community.

Could this be you?
Our volunteers come from all walks of life and backgrounds and, whether living, working or studying in Holborn, each brings their unique talents to the project.

“I feel very privileged to be part of the befriending scheme. It not only provides a lifeline to those in need of companionship, but has greatly enhanced my life”

“It has been a joy to see Margaret’s spirits lifted”

Do You Live, Work or Study in Holborn?

You could make a huge difference to the life of a lonely older person if you have just an hour or so to spare each week.

Our Central London Location

On the surface, our Central London location gives the impression of affluence with green spaces and streets bustling with busy professionals and tourists. But look deeper, and behind the imposing and historical buildings you will find social housing, poverty and deprivation.

Because of the local housing market, children often move away and other factors such as deteriorating health, death of a spouse or partner and shrinking friendship groups can all contribute to loneliness and isolation among older people.

“It is a wonderful service and I get on so well with Rae. She has been like a breath of fresh air.”

“The scheme has helped me so much. It’s nice to have company again”

“It helps me to know that Val is coming each week as I don’t get out now”

With a mission to respond to local needs, The Befriending Scheme is an important part of the work undertaken by Holborn Community Association, whose aim is for everyone to be able to participate fully in their local community.

Supporting Our Befriending Volunteers

At HCA we want our volunteers to feel confident and supported in their befriending role. We provide training and induction into the role and a programme of one to one supervision and support as well as regular meetings and events where volunteers can meet up, socialise and support one another.
