Good Neighbour Scheme.

Back

Are you interested in volunteering as a good neighbour?

These days, older people sometimes find themselves isolated from society and alone. Either through illness, or through losing contact with family members, it is very easy to ‘slip through the net’ and very difficult to find a way back into the community.

Our scheme is based on the value of human contact, and aims to provide these older people with somebody who will chat, share a cup of tea, hear their stories and keep an eye out for them. Knowing that somebody else takes time to think of you, or that there might be an answerphone message from your friend when you come back from the shops can make an enormous difference to your quality of life.

How can you find out more and join?

  • This scheme is open to anyone who feels that they can spare some time to build up a friendship with an older person. With guidance from the scheme organiser, volunteers are carefully matched with somebody with whom they feel they can easily chat; perhaps they have shared hobby or something else in common. It is then up to the older person and the volunteer to organise their meetings, which usually take place in the older person’s home. This could be on a regular weekly or fortnightly basis, or could be arranged by phone as and when. The volunteer has the opportunity to get to know somebody who they might otherwise not have, and the older person has the knowledge that somebody chooses to spend time with them and values them for who they are.
  • If you would like to know more about the scheme and/or are interested in volunteering please give me a call or drop me an email and we can arrange time for a chat.
